It is very important to have happy go lucky outlook towards life. In the previous times the general belief was the more serious the face the more intelligent and wise the person is. So in most of the photos we used to see those people were looking serious. But I believe the seriousness, intelligence and the wisdom doesn't have as such connection with it. Seriousness on face could be just a form of facial expression that some people born with serious face or some with happy face.
